In The Ethics, Spinoza defines cowardice as “ascribed to one whose desire is restrained by timidity regarding a danger which his equals dare to take on themselves” In particular, it “is nothing but fear of some evil, which most people do not usually fear” (Part III). In other words, if an individual (A) is a coward, then there is some object (O) which A fears but which A’s equals do not fear.
