In the Japan Today article Japanese Lawmaker Under Fire for LGBT Comment, the Japanese lawmaker Katsuei Hirasawa was reported to have stated that “if everyone became like [the LGBT] then a nation would collapse.” This statement seems to have been premised on the belief that individuals who are LGBT cannot reproduce. This belief is held by other lawmakers such as Mio Sugita. However, this belief is false.

Individuals who are LGBT can reproduce. For example, an article published in the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics identified 95 female same-sex parent households with biological offspring. Although the number is most likely much higher, this article implies that the number of LGBT persons who have reproduced and can therefore reproduce is at least 95. And if some individuals who are LGBT can reproduce, then not all individuals who are LGBT cannot reproduce. Therefore, the belief that individuals who are LGBT cannot reproduce is false.
