Rebirth

The ones who see the sufferings
the poisoned dart of hatred brings,
and choose instead to love all beings:
these are the wisest of the kings.

In higher realms they are reborn,
and happy dwell there from then on.

Ashen leaves drifting on a pand;
the fading echoes of a plane beyond;
footsteps hollow through forlorn years.
Tomorrow brings memories of distant peers.

Socratic Humour

Socrates, with his vision blurred,
and a hand on his bloddied ear,
turned around in jest and jerred
things we least expect to hear:

“What a pity, as I had feared,
that I am none the wiser;
for I had left the house ungeared,
defenceless to this encounter!”

The road to suffering can be veered
by the one not prone to anger,
who sees life as it is, absurd,
and enjoys a little laughter.

Empty Boat

Back from the seas,
and now at anchor,
the old man breathes,
a different temper:

For now he sees
no self or other,
and so he frees,
himself of anger.

False Trails

Wealth, pleasure, and hollow praises,
power, fame, gotten from the masses:

these false trails one learns to follow,
lead one nowhere else but sorrow.

Kodhana Sutta

Seven dreadful things befall
angry persons above all:
looks, sleep, profits, wealth, and fame,
friends will leave them all the same.

For anger makes one lose these seven.
The last of which? A place in heaven.
